Job Description

WAMPO is seeking a qualified, full-time, team-oriented Associate Transportation Planner to fill a recently vacated position. WAMPO is looking for an enthusiastic candidate willing to grow with WAMPO and adapt to changing priorities and assignments, one with a demonstrated ability to successfully contribute in multiple ways. The ideal candidate will have a mix of knowledge, skills, and abilities including transportation planning, meeting facilitation, GIS, knowledge of current issues facing regional transportation organizations, and be willing to learn and apply new skills and knowledge. The position will be initially tasked with assisting with the development of the long range transportation plan, freight planning, Intelligent Transportation Systems, the Congestion Management Process, and general transportation planning duties related to a Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).

WAMPO is a dynamic, progressive planning agency designated as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the greater Wichita, Kansas, metropolitan area. Wichita is located on the edge of the scenic Flint Hills in south central Kansas at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas rivers. Wichita is the largest city in Kansas and offers a high quality of life boasting multiple recreational, sporting, educational, and cultural attractions. Forbes Magazine in 2009 ranked Wichita the 6th best Bang-For-The-Buck Cities in the U.S. due to its solid housing markets, relatively stable employment, enviable cost of living, and quick daily commutes.

WAMPO provides its employees with a comprehensive compensation package, including competitive salaries, medical insurance, and a retirement plan. This position is an exempt position, and work in excess of 40 hours per week, as well as travel, may occasionally be required. WAMPO reserves the right to hire at the appropriate level. The position reports to the WAMPO Planning Manager.

The duties of the Associate Planner will include, but will not be limited to:

• Assist the Project Lead on the development of the next long range transportation plan in multiple ways, including writing, editing, meeting facilitation, research, mapping, public outreach, communications, coordination, and organization.
• Under the guidance and direction of the Manager, assume gradually more of WAMPO’s freight planning, Intelligent Transportation System, and congestion management process projects responsibilities.
• General MPO transportation planning functions.
• All other assigned duties.

The ideal candidate will have at a minimum a Bachelor’s degree in planning, public administration, engineering, geography, social sciences, or related fields. Potential candidates should possess superior organization, communication, and computer skills, as well as an attention to detail. Experience working for a MPO, regional planning agency, or other transportation planning agency is preferred, but not necessary. The candidate should have demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office products.

Applications for this position are to be completed through the City of Wichita Human Resources Department. This position will close on January 4, 2013. Information and application for employment may be obtained from their website at: http://agency.governmentjobs.com/wichita/default.cfm.
