The Supervising Planner position in the Bureau of Development Services (BDS) is responsible for supervising a group of technical, clerical, and professional planning staff who administer and implement the zoning code. The position supervises the work of staff who provide information to the public about zoning and land use regulations, review building permit and land use review applications for compliance with applicable land use laws and regulations. The position may act as staff specialist in advising professional associates in interpreting land use regulations and how the regulations should be applied in specific situations. The position establishes performance requirements and evaluates staff performance. The position provides leadership and works with staff to create a high-performance, service-oriented work environment that supports the City’s and bureau’s missions, objectives and service expectations.
This position also requires skill in creatively solving problems and working to achieve solutions with a variety of stakeholders including internal customers, community groups, developers, politicians, and the media. The position supervises one of several Sections in the Land Use Services Division, and reports directly to the Division manager. At this time, each Section is made up of one or more work groups/teams, each made up of professional planners, technical staff and/or clerical staff.
Note: Foreign language skills are desired, but not required. In particular, Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian/Slavic languages, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, or Korean would be useful. The current vacancy is in the Bureau of Development Services.
