Under general direction of the City Planner, to perform professional level work in the field of current and/or advance planning; to provide information and assistance to developers and the public on planning related matters; and to provide highly technical and responsible support to the City Planner and Director of Development.
JOB RELATED AND ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of: Principles and practices of urban planning; land use development codes and implementation strategies; methods of analyzing social, economic, population and land use trends; presentation techniques to commissions and boards; team building skills and methods of providing a high level of customer service; statistical principles; architectural styles, history, and design philosophies; and Geographic Information Systems, Microsoft Office software applications (i.e., Word, Excel, Power Point), and permit tracking database software.
Skill to: Conduct planning studies involving the correlation and assembly of information involving current and long range planning and land development; prepare written reports and present reports in a clear, concise manner to various commissions and committees; serve as staff to a variety of commissions, committees, and groups; prepare sub-area master plans, general plan and zoning code amendment recommendations to implement City’s land use development strategies; review planning applications and plans submitted to the Planning Commission and provide recommendations on approval, denial, or modification of applications; effectively use communication, presentation, analytical skills and problem solving techniques; participate in, supervise, and coordinate special planning, zoning, land use, transportation, and environmental studies; and assist and provide information to the public regarding the preparation and filing of planning applications and interpret planning and zoning regulations to the public at the counter, by telephone, email, and in writing.
Ability to: Work efficiently and effectively in a high volume, dynamic and highly professional organization; quickly establish priorities, manage multiple projects and work effectively to complete assignments on time with minimum direct supervision; be committed to working as a team member and to coordinate effectively with other co-workers and members of other departments; be highly flexible and willing to change as new challenges arise; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; check building plans for conformance with land use, architectural and zoning regulations, and suggest changes to achieve compliance; interpret planning and zoning programs to the general public; perform professional planning work with a minimum of supervision; manage project development and implementation; and provide training to less experienced planning staff.
Requires seven years as a Senior or Associate Planner and a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban planning or a related field OR a Master’s degree and five years of experience. AICP certification preferred.
Ability to work in a standard office environment; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
