This is a wonderful opportunity for a planning professional to perform current planning and zoning functions in a rapidly growing area. The position is with the County of Greenville, which is the largest County in terms of population (451,000 per the 2010 Census) and land area (795 square miles per the 2010 Census) in the state of South Carolina.
County offices are housed in a redeveloped shopping mall in downtown Greenville, one of the most desirable communities in the Southeast. Greenville offers abundant quality of life amenities, superior dining and entertainment options and outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and kayaking.
Under the direct supervision of the Zoning Administrator, the individual selected for the position will:
Assist with the development of departmental goals and objectives;
Perform day-to-day planning and zoning operations, which include but are not limited to preparing staff reports and presenting recommendations to the Planning Commission, County Council and other governing bodies;
Review permits on behalf of the Office of Zoning Administration;
Teach and educate our citizens and the development community about planning, zoning, development and other similar topics;
Have a thorough understanding of the County’s regulations as they pertain to Land Development within the zoned areas of the County; and be able to assist citizens and developers with interpretations of those regulations;
Provide direct input and be actively involved in modifications of our land development process, with the ultimate goal of providing exemplary customer service to our citizens and the development community.
The Department of Planning and Code Compliance is a dynamic department that focuses on customer service, a family atmosphere, integrity, innovation, teamwork and provides a 37.5 hour work week (8:30 AM – 5:00 PM). Occasional evening and weekend meetings will be a necessary part of this position.
Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in current planning (specifically planning and zoning) or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in city planning, urban and regional planning, architecture, urban design, economics, public administration or a closely related field. Certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is required, or should be obtained within six (6) months of employment.
A Master’s degree in planning or public administration is highly desirable and may be substituted for one year of experience.
Starting salary is $49,784.44 DOQ.
