The Town of Manchester, Vermont (population 4,391; 42.67 square miles; approximately 32 municipal employees with an operating budget of $4.2M) is accepting applications for Director of Zoning and Planning. Manchester is a picturesque town in the Battenkill River valley between Bennington and Rutland in the heart of the Green Mountain National Forest and near three ski resorts. The Town is home to a strong economy and civic culture, local and national retail stores, countless restaurants, cultural and recreational attractions and the famed Equinox Hotel. The Town is a terrific place to live and raise a family; its education system is consistently ranked one of the best in the State. The Town recently completed two highly visible capital projects: the Roundabout project in the heart of the business district that includes extensive streetscaping, and the Park House, a 4,500 square foot state of the art building at the Town’s largest park.
The Town is seeking a strong, dynamic, multi-talented, results-driven leader with a high degree of integrity as its Director of Zoning and Planning. Candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years experience in land use, planning, zoning and/or public administration, and strong commitment to public service and customer service. Position is responsible for all aspects of zoning and planning within the Town of Manchester (but not Village of Manchester), as well as serving as 9-1-1 Coordinator and member of Town’s emergency management team.
The Town has a long-standing commitment to zoning and planning. The current Planning Director/Zoning Administrator is leaving after twenty-four years of excellent service to the Town and its residents. The Town Plan, zoning bylaws and internal processes are in excellent condition.
Bachelor’s degree in related field strongly preferred but candidates will be considered on overall experience, qualifications, education and training. Master’s degree in related field and AICP accreditation is preferred but not required. Position is a management level position and requires a strong commitment to public service and customer service as well as an excellent work ethic. Successful candidate must be able to work in a team environment but must also be able to function independently without support staff. Evening and weekend work is required.
