The Central Arizona Governments (CAG) is seeking a Senior Community Development Planner to provide professional planning services to our region. With our central office located in the City of Apache Junction, CAG is a regional governmental planning agency serving 17 communities, two counties, three Native American tribes, and a total population of 430,000 throughout Pinal and Gila counties.
The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing a newly forming Community Development Program and conducting professional planning activities which will include writing and updating general plans; managing a variety of community development studies; working directly with redevelopment plans, revitalization plans, housing studies, economic development plans, and a range of other community development projects; updating zoning ordinances and city and town codes; and working on a number of regional documents and studies.
This position requires above-average writing and verbal communication skills, a thorough understanding of land use planning and zoning, knowledge of short-and-long range planning activities, experience in document preparation and project management, the preparation and oversight of contracts for services, and working with committees and community groups. Duties will include overseeing the agency’s Community Development activities, conducting research and analysis, assisting member communities with planning and community development services, and representing the organization on a variety of issues at the local, regional, state and federal levels.
Other functions of the position will include:
• Working with graphics, maps, databases, existing plans, land use studies, zoning ordinances, transportation plans, surveys, and preparing and writing plans, reports, papers and studies.
• Responsible for assessing the planning and community development needs of our cities and towns.
• Interpreting planning statutes and reviewing relevant legislation.
The ability to interface professionally with CAG’s member governments and to take the responsibility for overseeing and managing individual community projects from beginning to end.
This position will require demonstrated knowledge and experience in community development or regional planning, working independently, strong research and analysis skills, above-average writing and communication skills, and strong computer skills. The position requires a Master’s Degree in urban planning, urban studies, public administration or a related field and a minimum of four years of related experience. A current American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is desirable.
CAG provides a small office working environment and conducts business on a four day (10 hours per day) work week, Monday through Thursday.
Salary range is $65,000 to $75,000 DOQ with a competitive benefit package provided.
