Landslides Symposium The symposium's purpose was scope the document on planning for landslides and earth failures. Participants focused on the format and content of a publication that will include techniques for landslide identification, safe and economical uses for such lands, and how to mitigate the impacts of landslides. The symposium covered best practices for identifying landslide-prone areas in advance of landslide disasters, and alternative approaches to handling such areas in land-use planning documents of a city, town, or county. Participants also considered optional language that might be incorporated into state statutes that govern how planning, zoning, and subdivision control is done at the local level. The primary objectives of the symposium were: a). to develop an annotated table of contents for a landslides guidebook; b). to identify tools and resources that can be drawn upon by guidebook authors; and c). to identify and scope out a number of derivative products.
