CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM EXAMPLES

This is a collection of classification systems we examined for the LBCS project. Many of the examples in the collection have been widely referenced in working papers, case studies, and publications prepared for the LBCS study. They include the 21 examples we studied in the initial report, all the major classifications, such as SLUCM, SIC, and NAICS.

In addition to providing the coding and classification system for each example, we have also developed a taxonomic structure to classify these examples. It includes the following characteristics (attributes in the database):

  • Scale of the classification system (neighborhood, citywide or countywide, regional, state, national, or global),
  • Smallest taxonomic unit (structure, parcel, grids, etc.),
  • Coding level (hierarchical, exhaustive, multidimensional, etc.),
  • Coding scheme (numeric, text, combination, etc.),
  • Number of base classes at the top level,
  • Primary source of data where this classification was utilized,
  • Name of the jurisdiction where this classification was utilized,
  • Typical area and population where such classification was utilized,
  • Year the classification was last use,
  • Primary applications the classification system served, and
  • Bibliographic and online references.

For more discussions about the above characteristics see the working papers and the annotated bibliography .

We exported each of the classification examples from the master database in three formats (PDF, RTF, and PS) so that one could selectively download individual examples. The list of examples are sorted in the following ways:

We also have the entire collection of the samples in PDF and RTF formats.

FIND STANDARDS NOT ON THIS WEBSITE

One approach is to search online indexes for keywords LBCS, land-use, classifications, and so forth. But the results can be spotty or overwhelming, depending keyword choice. However, if you know of a jurisdiction that is using a classification standard, they you can refine the search results by entering additional keywords in the "Search within results" field.

Examples of other color coding schemes: We have also found many other color coding schemas on the web that you may want to research. Note that these implementations are not necessarily the LBCS Color Coding Standard, but they may be helpful as references.
