About APA and Planning
Describe how you have benefited from APA student membership to date.
Before I knew that the field of airport planning existed, finding that small handful of people who had the same likes and dislikes was a life changing benefit for me. I feel being able to network with practicing planners and meeting people with similar interest is the most powerful benefit the APA has given me.
Describe your qualifications for the SRC Regional Representative position.
Planning involves understanding the people and engaging with the built environment. I volunteered at the Regency Public Library, helping to craft programs for residents. I have worked at the Chamber of Commerce dealing with local businesses and economic development. I have worked at the Jacksonville International Airport immersing myself with different outlooks on people and place from around the world. My education and experience have help develop an attitude for finding answers to tough questions while working towards acceptable solutions, keeping in mind the people. These all have prepared me for dealing with difficult situations, allowing me to think critically and determine fitting solutions.
How can APA and its student leaders assist planning students as they transition into planning careers?
The APA can support students who are interested in planning and feed that interest. The networking opportunities and events are invaluable. But I believe the APA can be an intermediary/ guidance for resources and information. The problem lies in trying to relate to and understanding the changing needs of students the broad range of students. A student leader who is approachable, resourceful and accessible is quintessential to fostering a resilient and strong student organization within the APA. Having an open communication structure to help the facilitation and exchange of ideas and thoughts will also benefit those preparing to enter the planning profession.
Why did you choose planning as a career path?
The ability to combine my multiple interests in aviation, economic development and people are the main reason why I have become interested in planning. It gives me to opportunity to give back, contribute to and shape the environment while fostering community. It helps to showcase the best parts that make a place exciting for people. Planning is something that I cannot and have never stopped thinking about!
What have you learned from previous leadership experience?
I have learned that having an open mind is optional. In order to work with people, you need to eliminate the barriers while also developing level grounds on which you and others stand in order to benefit.
