Great Places in America Program

The Great Places in America Program celebrates excellence in planning.  APA annually recognizes 10 great neighborhoods, streets, and public spaces of exceptional character, quality, and planning. The neighborhoods, streets, and public spaces are suggested by residents or visitors.

Great Streets: A safe, sustainable street that takes into account all users and encourages social activities.

Great Neighborhoods: A unique, sustainable neighborhood that is at least 10 years old and has a variety of functional attributes that contribute to a resident’s day-to-day living.

Great Public Spaces: A gathering spot or part of a neighborhood, downtown, special district, waterfront, or other area within the public realm that helps promote social interaction and a sense of community.

Judging

Designees are chosen through a two-step process. First, all suggestions are reviewed. From this review, a limited number of suggestions will be invited to provide additional information. After a second review, the Great Places designees are selected.

Recognition

Great Places designees are recognized in October during National Community Planning Month. Winners receive certificates and virtual plaques. APA also publishes a special report highlighting the year’s great places
