David L. Callies, FAICP, received the 2012 Lambda Alpha International Member of the Year (LAI) Award. LAI is an international honorary society for the advancement of land economics. Its mission is to bring practioners and scholars together to discuss, debate and help solve dilemmas involving use of our land resources. Callies is Benjamin A. Kudo Professor of Law at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Alex Krieger
has been appointed by the President to a membership on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. Krieger is a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a principal in the Boston office of NBBJ. The seven-person fine arts commission is tasked with advising the federal government and the District of Columbia "on matters of design and aesthetics, as they affect the Federal interest and preserve the dignity of the nation's capital."
Sally Elmiger, AICP, has passed the Certified Green Professional and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Neighborhood Development Accredited Professional exams. Elmiger is an associate at Carlisle/Wortman Associates. With the certification, she will help clients evaluate sustainable development practices.
Laura Kreps, AICP, has passed the Zoning Administrator Certification exam offered by the Planning & Zoning Center at Michigan State University. Kreps is a planner at Carlisle/Wortman Associates. The certification confirms her aptitude in zoning administration and enforcement techniques.
Richard Newbern has been appointed demolition and property maintenance coordinator for the city of Brunswick, Georgia. He will manage the city's program for the demolition of abandoned and dilapidated structures.
Cameron Gloss, AICP, has joined the Fort Collins, Colorado, office of Clarion Associates as a senior associate. Gloss was formerly at AECOM Design + Planning and spent over 20 years with municipal planning agencies, including Fort Collins and Boulder, Colorado, where he worked in a number of positions.
Joseph Pobiner, FAICP
is the new director of planning for Virginia-based H&A Architects & Engineers. Pobiner's project experience extends throughout the U.S. and 24 countries on six continents throughout his 35-year career as a planner and urban designer. He is a visiting critic and lecturer to several universities.
Tim Nelson
has been named senior landscape architect project manager for Galloway & Company, Inc., a planning, engineering and architecture firm in Denver. Nelson brings 23 years of experience as a planner and landscape architect. He is a registered landscape architect in seven states and a member of the Home Builders Association of metro Denver.
Dwight H. Merriam, FAICP
has been selected as the Connecticut member of the Owners' Counsel of America, a nationwide network of property rights and eminent domain attorneys who seek to advance the rights of private property owners. Merriam is a partner with Robinson & Cole LLP, where he founded the Land Use Group. He is a past president of AICP and a past director of APA.
Natasha G. Manbeck, AICP,
has been named project manager of the Mid-Atlantic Transportation Planning Department of the planning and engineering firm McMahon Associates, Inc. Manbeck was formerly director of transportation services for the Chester County (Pennsylvania) Planning Commission. She is a Professional Engineer registered in Pennsylvania.
Terri L. Turner, AICP,
development administrator for Augusta, Georgia, has been named to the White House Champions of Change list. She is one of only six individuals chosen from among 1,500 nominees for making a "positive impact" in the communities they serve. Kui Zhao, AICP,
is now the master plan coordinator for Baltimore County Department of Planning, managing the implementation of Master Plan 2020, PlanMaryland planning area designations, and sustainable community applications. In addition, Kui is responsible for the department's water/sewer master plan amendments, school impact analysis and planning, and demographic and economic data analysis.
John P. Vodopich, AICP,
has been reappointed to a four year term on the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) by the Washington State Secretary of Transportation. Vodopich has been a TIB member since September 2007, and currently serves as the Community Development Director for the City of Bonney Lake, Washington.
James A. Moore, AICP,
has been named director of planning for HDR Architecture's international program. Moore will lead the urban planning efforts for all projects outside the U.S. He was formerly national director of HDR's community planning and urban design practice. Prior to joining HDR, Moore spent 12 years as a professor in the School of Architecture & Community Design at the University of South Florida.
Kathleen Pagan, AICP,
senior planner for Alachua County (Florida) Growth Management, participated in the Startup America Policy Challenge in Washington, D.C. in May. Pagan led an interdisciplinary team that proposed "Community Compost Collectors – Turning Waste into Food," which would apply the model of local startup Gainesville Compost to school composting. The proposal was selected as a finalist at the competition.
Brad Cramer, AICP,
assistant planning director for the City of Idaho Falls and a board member of the APA Idaho Chapter, has been appointed to serve on the Idaho Lands Resource Coordination Council. The council is advisory to the Idaho Department of Lands and establishes frameworks for projects that address multiple high priority areas identified in the Idaho Forest Action Plan.
Patricia E. Salkin
has been appointed the new dean of the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in Central Islip, New York. Salkin is a nationally known scholar and expert in land use planning and government ethics. She is currently associate dean and director of the Government Law Center of Albany Law School where she is also the Raymond & Ella Smith Distinguished Professor of Law.
Philip Hanegraaf, AICP,
has been named vice president and national planning market leader for transportation and infrastructure programs at RS&H, a facilities and infrastructure consulting firm. Hanegraaf will lead the firm's existing transportation planning services and take responsibility for expanding the firm’s client base. He is based in the Chicago office of RS&H.
Clement Lau, AICP,
recently joined the author panel for UrbDeZine, an online magazine that covers urban planning, architecture, transportation, historic preservation, ecology, and culture. He has also been a contributing writer for the California Planning & Development Report, commonly regarded as the authoritative periodical on planning and development issues in California.
Joseph Pobiner, FAICP,
has been named director of Atkins' North American planning and landscape architecture practice. He will be located in the firm's Dallas office. Throughout his 34-year planning career, Pobiner has worked on projects representing more than 250 million total acres and $52 billion in new construction. He was inducted into the AICP College of Fellows inducted in 2010.
Amanda Burden, FAICP,
has received the President's Medal from the Architectural League of New York. Burden is the chair of the New York City Planning Commission and director of the Department of City Planning. The President's Medal is bestowed on individuals to recognize an extraordinary body of work in architecture, urbanism, or design.
Diane T. Kushlan, AICP,
has been selected as one of 50 Women of the Year for 2012 by the Idaho Business Review, which "recognizes women in business and annually applauds them, from public, private and charitable business sectors, giving credence to work ethic, innovation and balance." Kushlan is the Professional Development Officer for APA's Idaho Chapter and a principal of the firm Kushlan / Associates.
Eugenie L. Birch, FAICP,
has been elected chair of The Municipal Art Society of New York, a nonprofit membership organization that fights for a more livable New York and advocates for intelligent urban planning, design, and preservation. She succeeds David M. Childs, who completed a three-year term as chair. Birch is chair of the city and regional planning department of the University of Pennsylvania School of Design.
George M. Kramer, AICP,
has left AECOM to start the land planning consulting firm of Kramer & Little. The firm's name is derived from Kramer and his late grandfather, Malcolm G. Little, a planning professor at Georgia Tech. With 11 years of experience in Central Florida, Kramer has helped plan communities throughout the state. Kramer & Little will focus on private sector representation as well as smaller, urban infill projects in Central Florida and the Space Coast.
Jonathan Nettler, AICP,
has been appointed managing editor of the planning news and commentary website Planetizen. Nettler will oversee the operations of the Planetizen website, Planetizen Press, and Planetizen Courses. He is an urban planner and historian with a background in architecture who has worked in numerous large cities on a wide range of project types. He previously served as project manager and project planner for Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn (EE&K) Architects.
Bill Fulton, AICP,
has been named vice president for policy & programs at Smart Growth America while retaining his roles of board member, principal, and shareholder with the consulting firm The Planning Center | DC&E. The transition is designed to open up newfound opportunities for The Planning Center | DC&E, including the potential for collaboration with SGA and other national organizations.
Douglas Smith, AICP,
has joined AECOM as the new managing principal for its Chicago architecture practice. He will provide overall architecture leadership to the practice's Chicago office and will collaborate closely with AECOM teams. With more than 30 years of experience, Smith most recently was group vice president and principal-in-charge of the International Studio at HOK Chicago. Smith is a registered architect and a certified planner.
Richard Carlisle, AICP,
president of Ann Arbor-based Carlisle/Wortman Associates, received the Michigan Association of Planning's annual President's Award in October 2011. Carlisle has been a professional planner for more than 30 years. He served as the president of the Michigan Society of Planning Officials during its merger with APA's Michigan Chapter in 2000 to create the Michigan Association of Planning.
Rick Mobley, AICP,
has joined Walker Parking Consultants as a senior transportation consultant. Mobley has more than 30 years of planning experience with a specialty in conducting studies and designing major parking facilities. He has held leadership positions with APA and the Institute of Transportation Engineers, and advisory positions for Texas A&M University. Previously he worked for Wilbur Smith Associates for more than 25 years.
