Sustainable Design

Sustainable design and development is an important part of creating green communities. The built environment should be designed and developed in a way that minimizes its impact on the natural environment while maximizing environmental quality for people in those communities. Reducing impervious surfaces and orienting buildings to maximize passive solar use are examples of sustainable design.

Some resources available from APA related to sustainable development include PAS Report 467, A Planners Guide to Sustainable Development, and the Policy Guide on Planning for Sustainability.
