Building a Box City

Posted October 24, 2011

Manhattan, Kansas

The Kansas State Student Planning Association (SPA) celebrated National Community Planning Month with Bluemont Elementary fifth grade students by building a BOXhattan.

Before the building began, the students learned about city planning, why it is important and the process developers go through before they can begin building. Once the students figured out what infrastructure cities need, it was time to create their city.  In order for the students to actually build their buildings, they had to apply for a building permit and some were approved and others were denied. After the city was developed, the students formed teams and mapped out the city.

We also emphasized to the students that city planners use all kinds of subjects in planning, such as math, writing, geography and even social studies. That day, we focused on math. We went through four story problems that city planners may face and worked through them together. These problems had addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The idea of working together in teams when creating the maps was a way to show them as being planners; they have to be able to work well in a group.

This was the first time SPA did box city with a class. SPA used this project during an open house event at the university last spring, and recently won the Kansas APA New Horizon Award for this project.
