2010 Transportation Planning Excellence Awards

Deadline for nominations: March 15, 2010

Co-Sponsored by U.S. Department of Transportation and American Planning Association

APA is continuing its support of the Transportation Planning Excellence Awards Program, a biennial awards program developed by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to recognize outstanding initiatives across the country to develop, plan, and implement innovative transportation planning practices. Eligible nominations must be for a project, process, group, or individual involved in a project or process that has used FHWA and/or FTA funding sources to make an outstanding contribution to the field of transportation planning. Award winners will be announced in the summer of 2010.

"Excellent planning work occurs in many communities and states across the country, but the Transportation Planning Excellence Awards winners go well beyond the standard practices and incorporate truly innovative and extraordinary efforts," says Associate Administrator Gloria M. Shepherd of the FHWA Office of Planning, Environment, and Realty. "These winning projects are making outstanding contributions to the field of transportation planning."

Associate Administrator Susan Borinsky of the FTA Office of Planning and Environment says that the office is "particularly excited" to include "Livability and Sustainability" as an award category and hopes to see nominations of innovative planning practice across a wide range of topics and regional settings. Award winners will provide important input to the DOT-HUD-EPA Partnership for Sustainability Communities as the three agencies work together to advance the concept nationally.

The award categories include:

  • Transportation Asset Management
  • Education and Training
  • Freight Planning
  • Emergency Management Planning
  • Linking Planning and Operations
  • Modeling and Technology Applications
  • Planning Leadership
  • Public Involvement and Outreach
  • Safety Planning
