Washington, D.C. • September 26-28, 2010 2009 Federal Policy & Program BriefingThere was plenty to talk about at the Federal Policy & Program Briefing in Washington, D.C., October 4-6, 2009. On the agenda was federal legislation dealing with transportation, climate change, energy, housing, and water — with information both on general trends and the specific bills that affect communities and planning. The challenges facing metropolitan areas — and the heightened interest in urban issues demonstrated by the new administration — were a big part of the discussions, which culminated in a keynote speech by the director of the newly created White House Office of Urban Affairs, Adolfo Carrion. Carrion is a planner by training and the former borough president of the Bronx. Another special focus was the new interagency collaboration at the federal level. One of the goals of this initiative is to break down barriers to efficient and coordinated regional planning. A highlight of the event was APA's participation in UN World Habitat Day, which was held at the National Building Museum on October 5. UN-HABITAT Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka was joined by U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan, Rockefeller Foundation president Judith Rodin, singer and affordable housing advocate Jon Bon Jovi, President Barack Obama (in a prerecorded video address), and others in celebrating the role urban planning plays in our global future.
