Review: E is for EnvironmentApril 2011 Ian James Corlett. Illustrated by R.A. Holt Atria Books, 2011 Ages 7-12
Ian James Corlett's book begins with an African proverb: "If many little people in many little places do many little deeds, they can change the face of the earth." This proverb represents the underlying assumption behind this book — that children can create change. E is for Environment informs children and encourages them to think about the impact of their actions on the environment, and then to act on their new knowledge.
The book contains 26 simple stories, no longer than 2–3 pages each, featuring two children named Lucy and Elliott. The stories, accompanied by full-page, color illustrations, are about specific topics ranging from reusing grocery bags to keeping an eye out for energy-sucking appliances; each tale concludes with several questions to help children think about the impact of their actions, and simple steps they could take to make a change.

This book makes a vital task — conserving natural resources and protecting the environment — seem fun. By encouraging children to think about their actions and come to their own conclusions, it empowers them to create positive changes in their habits, and maybe even teach their parents a thing or two along the way. E is for Environment is an excellent resource for both parents and educators who want to teach environmental sustainability. | |
