Design as A Catalyst for Learning (Class Notes)

Ramona Mullahey

July 1998

A must-read book for anyone interested in promoting K-12 planning education co-written by Peter Hawley, APA staff in Washington, D.C., along with Meredith Davis, Bernard McMullen, and Gertrude Spilka. The book reports the outcome of a multi-year study of K-12 design education that included a literature review, survey of teachers, and site visits to a small sample of schools. The goal of the study was to understand the types of K-12 design activities occurring in schools and what teachers see as the benefits of these activities.

The authors use the term "design," most likely because the study was financed by the National Endowment for the Art's Design Program. However, their findings are equally applicable to planning and other types of student-centered thematic learning. Most notable is the book's publication by a mainstream educational Association.
