APA Award: The Kids Neighborhood Workshop

January 1999

The Kids Neighborhood Workshop
City of Rancho Cucamonga

Kids think planning is fun! Try Rancho Cucamonga's neighborhood workshop and see why. The online workshop is a manual of eight exercises for kids plus a facilitator's guide. The exercises give children experience in observing, documenting, visioning, consensus building, mapping, and researching as they make plans for the neighborhood. Although it is geared toward a classroom setting, the workshop can be used by individuals. The workshop approach can be used in any community, be it urban or suburban.

Planners can easily adapt the step-by-step activities regarding architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation and engineering, it is also transferable to other professional disciplines. Got a problem area or site in your community? Why not put some of the best minds available to work on it. Winner of the 1999 California Chapter, American Planning Association Public Education Award.
