I Live in a Town is an insightful look at an American town from the perspective of Doak, a real-life third-grader and resident of a small town in rural New Hampshire.
Doak narrates the geographical, historical, and cultural tour of his town, comprised of color photographs. Readers find things that have changed and things that have remained the same since the town's inception. The concept of the town square, such a prevalent feature of early eastern towns, is introduced early in the book: first it was used as a grazing area for animals, then as the center of town government and commerce.
The book also describes the town meeting, the vehicle through which citizens (or, in this particular town, landowners) contribute their voice to the shaping of their community, and the much anticipated town fair.
