Green Map System

www.greenmap.org

Green Map’s goal is to encourage citizens of all ages to use on-line mapping systems as a means of identifying and sharing the ecological and cultural resources of their cities with both residents and visitors. At the site you can learn how to become an online map-maker and gain access to maps (many made by kids) and the international community of map-makers. The site also has news, an events calendar, Green Map stories, an activity guide, background for educators and youth leaders, and additional activities and links.

National Geographic Society

www.nationalgeographic.com/resources/ngo/education/

This site contains free lesson plans, an on-line forum for sharing curriculum ideas, information on the geography education standards, links to all the state geographic alliances, and information on Geography Awareness Week activities.

The Perry-Castaeda Library Map Collection at The University of Texas at Austin

www.lib.utexas.edu/Libs/PCL/Map_collection/historic_us_cities.html

This site contains a wide range of U.S. historical city maps.

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)

www.usgs.gov

USGS has a wealth of geographic information, including GIS data on water resources, plus a special area (www.usgs.gov/education.html) devoted to K-12 education, with teaching packets, posters, booklets and other resources on working with maps, global change, earth science, and other topics.

VirtualTourist

www.virtualtourist.com

Through its users, VirtualTourist provides travel information for off-the-beaten-path destinations or attractions that only a local would know about. It offers a place to share travel experiences, stories, and pictures; interact with others; and gain travel insights and up to the minute travel reports from people who like to travel.
