Hold Your Own Children's Groundwater FestivalJanuary 2007 Children's Groundwater Festival
Water management is becoming an increasingly important issue for communities and planners, and education is one of the primary ways of motivating communities to pay more attention to the water systems around them. If you are interested in holding groundwater education events for young people, the Groundwater Foundation can provide some helpful resources.
Based in Lincoln, Nebraska, the Groundwater Foundation is the founder of the Children's Groundwater Festival, a one-day event designed to teach children about groundwater with hands-on experiments, interactive displays, expert speakers, and entertainment. The successful festival has been replicated all around the U.S. as well as internationally. Based on this success, the foundation has developed three books on how to organize a groundwater festival in one's own community:
*"Making Waves: How to Put on a Water Festival"
*"Making More Waves: Ideas from Across the U.S. and Canada for organizing a Festival"
*"Making Discoveries: Groundwater Activities for the Classroom and Community"
A groundwater educational event such as this can teach kids vital water management concepts such as how landfills work, point-source and nonpoint-source pollution, aquifers, water treatment, terrariums, and the water cycle. It will give them the knowledge they need to be young water stewards in their community. | |
