Education for Sustainability (Class Notes)

Ramona Mullahey

July 1997

Education is viewed as the road map for implementing a national vision for sustainability that will lead the United States into the years to come.

The report, Education for Sustainability: An Agenda for Action, developed as a project of the President's Council on Sustainable Development (PCSD), builds on the policies and actions of the PCSD and suggests initiatives to help implement these policies. A highly readable document, the Agenda for Action is a starting point in the national dialogue. Its recommended actions for infusing the concepts of sustainability in formal and nonformal education settings, and at all levels of government including international, lay the groundwork for individual and collective life choices and the forging of new partnerships to achieve a more sustainable future.

Editor's Note (March 2007): The report is now stored online here by the Global Change Research Information Office (GCRIO), a service of the US Global Change Research Program. The USGCRP is a collaborative effort of several US government agencies that "supports research on the interactions of natural and human-induced changes in the global environment and their implications for society."
