YMCA Earth Service Corps: A Collaboration to Empower YouthJanuary 2007 YMCA Earth Service Corps
The YMCA Earth Service Corps took root in 1989 with the idea of making a long-term contribution to the surrounding community. Its mission is to empower young people to be effective, responsible global citizens by providing opportunities for environmental education and action, leadership training, project development, and international/cross-cultural exchange. It is organized as a collaboration of students and teachers from both public and private schools. Coordinated by the YMCA, the Earth Service Corps receives support from business, government, higher educational institutions, and other nonprofit organizations.
The Earth Service Corps now operates in 111 YMCAs and 30 states, involving 20,000 young people who have collectively completed more than a million hours of service.
