Acorn Naturalists: An Extensive Environmental Education CatalogueFebruary 2007 Acorn Naturalists is the product division of The Acorn Group, an independently-owned company in Southern California that offers a wealth of environmental education publications and training for teachers, naturalists, interpreters, parents, and many others. Their online catalogue features thousands of trail and classroom resources, classified into several interest areas and types (e.g. books, publications, DVDs, trail equipment, kits, etc.).
While any category can be useful to teaching concepts related to environmental planning, here is a sampling of interest areas most closely related:
* Nurturing a Sense of Place
* Creating Physical Landscapes for Learning
* Cultivating Environmental Literacy
* Bioregional Approaches to Science Education
This list is certainly not exclusive, so be sure to check out other categories and resources in Acorn's catalogue.
One popular resource to highlight is A Child's Place in the Environment, a series of six curriculum binders offering about 20 lessons each (along with supporting materials). Each binder applies to a grade level between 1 and 6. The award-winning series is described further in the Classroom Earth resource database. Of particular relevance to planning is the Grade 6 binder, Achieving a Sustainable Community.
Another excellent resource is Living Lightly in the City.
