Living Lightly in the City

February 2007

Living Lightly in the City is an environmental education guidebook designed to inspire an awareness in young students of their immediate community environment. Through this continuously tested and updated comprehensive curriculum, students learn connections between their lives and nature: where resources come from, the life cycle, and how they can contribute to conservation and protecting the natural environment.

Published by the National Audubon Society and piloted at the Schlitz Audubon Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Living Lightly in the City comes in two volumes, one for grades K-3 and one for grades 4-6. The second volume expands on the first's general introduction, adding complexity to the subject matter. Students recognize how plans and animals adapt to city life, learn the interrelationship between the built and natural environments, and discover further options for action.

Living Lightly in the City is the precursor to Living Lightly on the Planet, a similar style publication but with a global focus.
