Historic Neighborhood Schools
National Trust for Historic Preservation

The National Trust for Historic Preservation is working to save historic neighborhood schools at a time when more and more are in danger of being abandoned. They released a landmark publication, Why Johnny Can’t Walk to School: Historic Neighborhood Schools in the Age of Sprawl (PDF) to shed light on why this is happening.

The National Trust has partnered with nonprofits and government agencies to strive to preserve neighborhood schools, which contribute not only to a sense of history but also to a sense of community. Learn about success stories, school preservation campaign strategies, connections to Smart Growth, an overview of school preservation, and more.
