What is a Community? From A to ZDecember 2006 What Is a Community? From A to Z By Bobbie Kalman
Crabtree Publishing Company, 2000
What Is a Community? describes multiple parts of a community, with each part represented by a letter of the alphabet. Pages cover a wide range of community characteristics, from specific places such as the zoo to abstract concepts like quality of life.
The book talks about the visible elements of a community like buildings and transportation; however, it also does well in informing readers of the less apparent -- though very important -- causes and consequences of community life, for example, where food comes from, waste and pollution, cultural heritage, utilities, and volunteering, to name just a few.
What Is a Community? succeeds in pointing children toward what is truly important in a community: the natural environment, jobs, education, government services, safety, and community involvement. It encourages them to become experts in their communities:
"X and Y are for becoming an expert in your community...Learn the names of the shopkeepers, fire chief, and government officials in your neighborhood. Visit the local museum to learn more about your community's history. Find out what is the main industry in your city or town. Being an expert will make you feel grateful for all the things your community provides for you." (p. 30)
Reading What Is a Community? can be an valuable guide for young citizens determined to gain that expertise.
