Cities of Today, Cities of Tomorrow: United Nations Curriculum

February 2007

As the number of people living in cities has increased to over half the global population, the United Nations has placed cities more and more at the center of its focus. Cities of Today, Cities of Tomorrow is a six-week curriculum from the United Nations CyberSchoolBus that encourages students to think about, and plan, the cities of the future.

The curriculum is primarily composed of six weekly units:

* What is a City?
* Brief History of Urban Expansion
* What is a City Made Of?
* What Makes Cities Grow?
* Consequences of Urbanism
* Sustainable Cities

Classes use the knowledge they gain from these weekly units to concurrently construct their "ideal city," first on paper and then as a 2-D or 3-D design. They can even share their city ideas with classes around the world or UN experts.

Cities of Today, Cities of Tomorrow is flexible in both subject matter and grade level. The curriculum is presented in tiers for grades 5-7 and 8-11, and can also be appropriate for grades 4 and 12. Subjects incorporated into the units include History, Social Studies, Geography, Economics, Global Studies, Government and Civics, World Civilizations, Current Events and Environmental Studies. There are plenty of supplemental materials -- city profiles, an interactive quiz, and a lot more -- to make this a complete and multifaceted curriculum.
