Community YouthMapping Management Institute

April 2008

The Academy for Educational Development (AED) is hosting two one-day seminars -- one on Monday, April 21st and one on Friday, May 23 -- for people interested in holding a Community YouthMapping (CYM) workshop in their own communities.

What is Community YouthMapping? According to the AED website, it is "a process...through which young people canvass local businesses and organizations and document where to find resources for children and families." The results of the youth canvassing are mapped using GIS and disseminated to the community.

Community YouthMapping has been used in over 100 communities in the U.S., and a program has been started in Egypt. Community centers, issue spots, resource gaps, and work opportunities are a sampling of things mapped by CYM.

The AED seminars, which will take place in Washington, DC, are low-cost training opportunities for citizens interested in bringing CYM to their own cities and towns. The seminars will provide a ten-step methodology for the day-to-day CYM mapping strategy management. Participants will also receive a YouthMapping guide, a CD with customizable management tools, and access to the CYM web-based data management system. With the web data system, communities can enter and manage data from remote locations.
