Spaces Places: Everyday LandmarksJuly 2008 Created as part of the American Institute of Architects’ (AIA) 150th anniversary, “Spaces Places: Everyday Landmarks” is a 12-page workbook that introduces to students to the association’s 10 Principles of Livable Communities. Upon completion of the workbook, each student will have designed a school or community landmark.
The book, developed by the AIA Minnesota Architecture in the Schools Committee, targets fifth graders and is used as a companion to architects’ classroom visits. “Spaces Places: Everyday Landmarks” gives students an opportunity to discover artistic design, mathematical scale and new ways to observe the world around them, and ultimately contribute to greater diversity in the future architectural industry.
Workbook topics cover:
• How architects observe the world
• How buildings designed by architects relate to everyday life
• Types of architectural drawings (i.e. plans, sections, elevations)
• Why scale and proportion matter
• How buildings are constructed (brief description of structure and cladding systems)
• Steps to become an architect
