Illinois’s McHenry County and Kane County cover more than 400,000 fertile acres that, over the last 50 years, have been used for commodity crops or converted to newly constructed subdivisions. With a growing demand for local foods, both counties have bolstered efforts to meet this demand. This session will cover both traditional (surveys, focus groups) and innovative (health impact assessment) planning tools each community used to assess and plan for increased local food production.

Bio: I have been with the Kane County Health Department since November 2010 and am responsible for the department’s Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP), emergency response planning, and participating in the Kane County Planning Cooperative. Prior to my public health career, I spent nine years in the information technology field working for a commercial real estate corporation. My career with Kane County began at the Development and Community Services Department in the Planning Division, working with the land use planners, as part of an internship for a master’s program. My first project for the health department was conducting a comprehensive community health assessment and creating an update to the five year community health improvement plan. This plan is the guiding document for the department and the community, aligning the work of many organizations so they are all focused on the same health issues. In April 2012, the plan was unanimously adopted by the Kane County Board of Health and is now in the implementation phase.
