Bio: Aaron Koch is the Deputy Commissioner for sustainability in the City of Chicago’s Department of Water Management. In this role, he is responsible for implementing the water sustainability initiatives in Sustainable Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s roadmap for environmental stewardship and economic development. Aaron previously served as a Senior Policy Advisor in the New York City Mayor's Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability. He was an author of the water chapters of PlaNYC, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s sustainability plan, as well as the New York City Wetlands Strategy and the Sustainable Stormwater Management Plan. As part of this work, he was a creator of New York City’s strategy to improve stormwater management through a $1.5 billion investment in green infrastructure. Aaron also coordinated the City’s waterfront policy initiatives including the implementation of Vision 2020: New York City Comprehensive Waterfront Plan and the New York City Waterfront Action Agenda. Aaron previously worked as the Director of the Mayors' Institute on City Design; as a Fellow in the Office of Mayor Richard M. Daley; and as the National Vice President of the American Institute of Architecture Students. He is currently a faculty member at Columbia University in the Earth Institute’s Master of Sustainability Management program.
Education: Aaron holds a Master of City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Minnesota.

Bio: Karen Sands is the Manager of Sustainability for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District. She has been in this position for three years managing a program to encourage widespread implementation of green infrastructure throughout the MMSD region; she also works on energy (conservation and the use of renewables) and climate change mitigation/adaptation programs for MMSD. She has over 20 years of professional planning experience altogether in consulting and government, and is certified by the American Institute of Certified Planners.
Education: Master's of Regional Planning and Bachelor's of Geography, both from the State University of New York at Albany.
