Tour all 1.5 miles of the Cermak/Blue Island Sustainable Streetscape and see how cutting-edge sustainable design and “complete streets” principles can be implemented in the public right of way. Participants will also view one of Chicago's top 12 safety zones, Pickard Elementary School, which features tools such as speed feedback signs, high visibility crosswalks, speed humps, and pavement stenciling. Bio: David Zavattero is Deputy Director of the Chicago Department of Transportation. David heads the Traffic Safety Division at CDOT where he is responsible for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology, traffic engineering, safety engineering, and planning. Major projects include the Chicago Transportation Management Center (TMC); citywide signal timing programs; Transit Signal Priority planning, engineering, and operations; Smart Corridors; Arterial Performance Monitoring Systems, Safety Zones and automated enforcement programs. Prior to CDOT David was Deputy Director at the Chicago Office of Emergency Management and Communications, ITS Program Manager for the Illinois Department of Transportation, and Deputy for Operations of the Chicago Area Transportation Study (CATS). He has held senior positions in the public and private sectors.
Education: David holds a B.S.-Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of Massachusetts and an M.A.-Economics from Northwestern University. He is active in many professional organizations and serves on the Policy and Business Council of Intelligent Transportation Society of America (ITS America).
