Technology Division Elections 2007

Are you interested in taking a more active role in defining division activities and programs by serving as an elected division leader?

Positions include: Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary/Treasurer, with all terms running for two years. Please review the general descriptions of these positions below. To put your name in the hat for one of the elected positions, prepare and submit a brief (not more than 300 words) position statement and a concise summary of your background and qualifications to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Be sure to include any APA or other volunteer leadership experience.

Send your statement to David Simpson of the Tech Division Nominating Committee at dave.simpson@louisville.edu. The Nominating Committee will present a slate of at least one candidate for each office. Candidates' unedited statements will be posted on the Division's website and distributed to the membership.  Please contact current office holders if you have any questions.

All nominees must be paid-up members of the American Planning Association as well as the Technology Division. Nominees may not hold any elected APA national position.

Elected Positions:

Division Chair
Division leadership offers individuals many opportunities for participation in APA leadership, and for the provision of member value through the division. These include:

  • Attain a more active level of participation in APA
  • Use and further develop leadership skills
  • Network with leaders in the field of planning
  • Contribute to the advancement of planning in the area(s) represented by the division
  • Participate in APA at a national level

These opportunities come with responsibilities to the APA organization as well as the division, including APA Division Leaders meetings as well as frequent communication with Tech Division Leaders.


Division Vice-Chair
The Division Vice-Chair assumes the responsibilities of the Division Chair should this position become vacant or the Division Chair is unable to fulfill them. The Vice Chair should participate in developing the division budget, work plan, and represent the leadership in other division activities and projects.

Secretary/Treasurer
The Division Secretary/Treasurer is responsible for managing division funds, developing a proposed annual budget in conjunction with other division leaders for membership approval, paying division bills promptly, keeping an accurate, current accounting of income and expenses, and filing timely financial reports.

The Division Secretary/Treasurer is also responsible for taking and submitting minutes of the annual business meeting and maintaining division historical and financial documents. The Secretary/Treasurer is also responsible for maintaining division archives and at the end of their term, passing the material on to the in-coming officer.

Communications Chair
Communicate and build relationships with non-APA audiences. Ensure outbound media communications has a consistent and professional voice and market the Division as a resource for planners looking to use innovative technology in their work.

Policy Chair
Define and advocate for technology policies both within and outside of APA that support planners and the division. Advise APA on technology-related policy issues.

Research Chair
Conduct innovative and practical research that will inform future APA Tech activities and future policy for both APA Tech and APA.

Website Chair
Manage the APA Tech Division website, including editorial, technical and operational issues. Coordinate with APA to ensure consistency between the APA Tech web presence and APA.

Conference Chair
Coordinate, apply for, and manage the APA Tech two by-right sessions. Introduce the APA Tech Division at these sessions. Review and recommend other conference sessions APA is considering that centrally involve technology. Update the management team about other technology efforts planned for the national conference.

Leadership Nominating Committee

The Technology Division of APA is inviting division members to serve on a nominating committee. This is a wonderful opportunity to become more involved with the leadership of the division. Two positions are available, working with Dave Simpson to assist with this year's election. The nominating committee will be responsible for facilitating the election of a slate of officers (Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary-Treasurer) for the division.
