Chapter Legislative Workshops

What Is a Chapter Legislative Workshop?

The chapter legislative workshop is a resource available to chapters to explore legislative and policy issues of importance in your state or region. Flexibility is the key to this program. Various legislative and policy topics can be discussed over differing time periods. Some chapters have devoted an entire day to discussing legislative and policy issues and others have incorporated an abbreviated discussion into a luncheon speaking engagement during their annual APA chapter conference. The options are obviously endless and we leave it up to you to think about how to best communicate these important issues to your chapter.

Most workshops incorporate a discussion of the "Growing Smart" approach to modernizing state planning statutes. APA national speakers can also discuss the APA's national legislative priorities, the policy program's goals and objectives and how the national policies relate to local initiatives. Other topics for chapters to consider when designing a workshop include: analysis of specific state land use legislation, and recommendations for chapter legislative programs on key elements such as using legislative volunteers strategically, setting expectations, and measuring results.

A note about costs. APA will try to accommodate every chapter request. It would be desirable to stretch our budget by some modest cost sharing on the part of the chapter, if possible, which would allow us to cover more requests. This could be in the form of providing one night's accommodation or covering part of the airfare. In addition, legislative workshops are eligible for chapter legislative or peer to peer grants. Please contact Government Affairs for information about these programs.
