Managing Floodplain Development The threat of flooding is widespread, but planning can reduce the risk of a natural disaster due to flooding. In this workshop, participants learn floodplain management basics about permitting, ordinances, and elevation certificates as well as about higher standards and map modernization. Participants learn how planning is used to safely manage floodplain development. The workshop includes a thorough review of minimum standards set by the National Flood Insurance Program and necessary components of a Floodplain Development Ordinance. The role and responsibilities of local floodplain administrators are discussed. Participants learn how to regulate new development and to monitor existing development in the floodplain to reduce the risk of a disaster. The workshop presents information on the development of new digital flood maps, properly using and interpreting elevation certificates, and flood profile data. This is a 3-hour workshop. It can easily be extended to a 4-hour workshop to add coverage of local issues presented by a local floodplain administrator. The workshop consists of a presentation, handouts, and opportunities for questions from participants. Sample schedule:
