Tuesdays at APA LISC Chicago's New Communities Program Tuesday, January 16, 2007 The New Communities Program is a long-term initiative of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)/Chicago to support comprehensive community development in 16 Chicago neighborhoods. Since 1998 this program has worked to rejuvenate challenged communities, bolster those in danger of losing ground, and preserve the diversity of areas in the path of gentrification. Plans for these neighborhoods were unveiled in May 2005, and since that time NCP staff have been working to implement the plans. APA's Illinois chapter recognized their work with an award at the chapter's recent conference. Joel Bookman, Director of Programs for LISC/Chicago, talked about this initiative's planning process and what has resulted so far for these communities. About the Speaker  Joel Bookman, Director of Programs, LISC/Chicago, is a consultant in strategic planning, economic and real estate development, and nonprofit management. He is also a lecturer in nonprofit management at the North Park University Graduate School of Business. Bookman previously led comprehensive community development efforts on Chicago's northwest side while serving as chief executive of four different organizations. He holds a master of urban planning and policy degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
