Tuesdays at APA The Last Four Miles: Completing Chicago's Public Lakefront Tuesday, July 10, 2007 In 1909 Daniel Burnham created the Plan of Chicago, which envisioned a fully public Lake Michigan shoreline for the city of Chicago. In honor of the plan's 100-year anniversary, Chicago's Friends of the Parks has initiated a major civic improvement project to fulfill Burnham's vision for the southeastern portion of the lakefront. Peter Kindel of Topografis presented their plan, which proposes a series of parks and shoreline restoration projects to complete the last four miles of Chicago's 30-mile lakefront and ensure public accessibility. He also discussed the relevance of major civic initiatives in the 21st century, their potential benefits to underserved neighborhoods, and the challenges of achieving such plans within today's heightened environmental consciousness and understanding.
