Advanced Specialty Certification Program Update

On behalf of the AICP Commission, I am writing to share an important announcement regarding the status of applications for AICP’s Advanced Specialty Certifications (ASC).

In July 2017, the Commission voted to no longer accept applications for the Certified Environmental Planner (CEP), Certified Transportation Planner (CTP), and Certified Urban Designer (CUD) credentials. Applications will be accepted one last time prior to the May 2018 examinations.

The advanced specialty credentials will continue to be supported and recognized in the same way they have been, and even more so. Certification maintenance requirements will also remain in place as continued demonstration of credential holders’ commitment to the value of the credential.

The number of applicants for specialty certification shows we’ve met the current market demand. After evaluating the volume of new applications and the requirements for maintaining the application and examination process, the Commission consulted with Divisions Council and Chapter Presidents Council advisors to conclude that this is the most responsible path forward.

At the same time, we are excited to launch a new campaign promoting the value of AICP certification to employers, the academic community, and other influential audiences in the coming year.

After conducting significant market research in 2016 to understand perceptions of the AICP and ASC certifications, and evaluating trends related to hiring certified professionals, our campaign will express the value that the certifications provide to the planning community, the public, and other stakeholders.
