LAW SESSION Well That Was Rough...The 86th Texas Legislature Wrap-Up and Next Steps in Planning Advocacy

5

This type of session is extremely helpful and I learned a lot about things that will affect planners in Texas, even if those are outside of the type of planning I do. One of the speakers was crude and unprofessional, which was disappointing, especially for his prominence in the Texas planning community.

How to Finish the Plan when Your Plan Falls Apart

4

The speakers were engaging and it was helpful to hear their public process and the bumps along the way, but there are too many dissimilarities between their community and mine to make it very relevant moving forward.

Embracing Density -- the Needed Generational Paradigm Shift

2

Good topic, but the examples were not diverse and only focused on how to "sell" the idea through the public engagement. Not much discussion on policy shifts, regulatory changes to help facilitate, or actual results.

Bike Planning & Funding for Small Cities in Metropolitan Suburbs

5

This was a good high level discussion of how smaller cities were able to incorporate various bike facilities into their existing network. Particularly interesting to see that there are methods that do not require full street rebuilds and multi-million dollar projects for just a few roads. Some of the example cities have done well with efficient use of funding to gain a large amount of bike miles.

Meeting the Market: Urban Solutions for New Neighborhoods

4

The speakers did a great job covering the start-to-finish process of developing an infill neighborhood in a growing city like Austin. I appreciated their honesty and openness about costs and the political obstacles. I wish that they had fit the Grove's story in a bit more with the overall plan for the city.
