Tuesday, November 14, 2017, 3:29 p.m. CST

Keynote Speaker Janet Echelman

4

I really enjoyed hearing about these art works and the artist process. I felt like towards the end it was just more examples of works in different places, which was nice but less relevant to planners in general.

The Intersection of Planning and Urban Forestry

5

Great presentation from a very knowledgeable presenter. While I have read about the value of trees as service infrastructure, I learned about many other services they provide, how it is quantified and how to explain it from different angles that can make sense to different people. Great job!

Wireless Communications: How Did We Get Here and What Does it Mean for Ohio Communities?

5

I was expecting a somewhat interesting presentation, but the presenters did an excellent job at providing background on the topic, explaining the laws and how they might impact various aspects of planning for communications, land use, permitting, etc. This is not a topic that will impact my job, but I found the topic very fascinating from a citizen point of view. Fantastic job!

Ethics for Planners

5

I have to be honest, I went to this session expecting another dull ethics discussion, but the presenters chose to discuss the ethics and responsibilities of online interactions between planners and the public. Not only did they choose a current topic but they presented it in a very productive way. Discussion was engaging, lively and stayed on topic. It was a very fun and useful training. Great job!!

Cleves Business District: How to Remake it With Market Based Planning

2

This would have been a good presentation for an introduction to planning, but it was not really useful to a group of experienced professional and citizen planners.

Tuesday, October 3, 2017, 11:22 a.m. CDT

Our Driverless Future: How Autonomous Technology Will Fundamentally Reshape Our Cities

5

I have been avoiding this topic, even though I know it is something planners should learn as much as they can about. The two presenters were knowledgeable and gave a good overview of the issues--most of which are unresolved at this point. Likely impacts were also discussed. The speakers knew each other and played off each other very well.

Tuesday, October 3, 2017, 11:17 a.m. CDT

Keynote Speaker Janet Echelman

5

This was one of the best keynotes I have ever listened to. Without over-explaining, Janet Echelman made very clear the important role that artists can play in making cities beautiful and functional. It was also refreshing to attend an APA-related session where aesthetics was emphasized.

Building Momentum: Toledo's Downtown Master Plan

4

This was a good presentation. There was interesting data presented, and outcomes and hoped-for outcomes were discussed in just about the right amount of depth. There were allusions to Toledo neighborhoods by Andrew Overbeck that might have been more useful if a little more information--both map-wise and description-wise--had been provided.

Embracing an Age-Friendly Ohio: Lessons From Columbus and Beyond

3

The speakers in this session were knowledgeable and well prepared. They talked in great detail--too much, I think--about their planning processes and talked much less about outcomes. I understand that they wouldn't have had many outcomes of their own to speak of yet, but it would have been good to hear more about the outcomes they were hoping for. At the end of the session, they showed a video of a woman with declining mobility living successfully on her own in Columbus. I liked the video and think it could have served as the basis for a discussion of what services were necessary to have in place for people in similar situations to be able to manage in a reasonable manner. I do appreciate all the work that went into this session.

Wireless Communications: How Did We Get Here and What Does it Mean for Ohio Communities?

5

A lot more interesting than I thought it would be. Fascinating what passes as 'law' at the state and federal level. This session has me asking MORPC legislative arm if they are watching all bills coming through? As this bill passed without much scrutiny by the cities it greatly affected.

Strategically Planning for Medical Marijuana Into You Community

5

Very interesting, especially in a state hackled by opioid crises. Is this possibility a help or not? Each community will decide, based upon culture more than law.

Workforce Development as a Planning Tool

4

Pros: really got the audience involved in discussing how workforce development is very much part of our long-term planning. Cons: speakers were primarily promoting one way of doing this - would probably have been advantageous to have another group, who have gone about it a little differently, partner with them.

Technology in Society and the Impact on Planning

5

This not only focused on cool technology we can use, but the ideas behind WHY we use this as well as how technology is second nature to the younger generation, but they certainly need to be taught the basics behind the technology. For example, if they are modeling cool maps based on data, do they understand the basics of a map (north arrow, what topography is, etc.) and the basics behind the data. Source citing data was also discussed. Thoroughly enjoyed.
