Essential Smart Growth Fixes for Zoning Codes
APA National Capital Area Chapter
Upper Marlboro, MD
Zoning is a critical tool used in land-use planning. Across the country, local governments are searching for ways to create vibrant communities that attract jobs, foster economic development, and are attractive places for people to live, work, and play. But many are discovering that their land development codes and ordinances often get in the way of achieving these goals, and they might not have the resources or expertise to make the specific regulatory changes that will create more sustainable communities. This discussion is intended to provide tools and information local governments need to revise their land development regulations.
Mr. Nelson will review the components of the EPA publication “Essential Smart Growth Fixes in Urban and Suburban Zoning Codes.” This document provides local and regional governments with ideas, strategies and best practices to make revisions to zoning codes. Strategies for implementation are organized according to a range of potential actions such as modest adjustments, major modifications and wholesale changes, thus providing resources appropriate to nearly any jurisdiction.
