RI CRS User Group Meeting - Second
APA Rhode Island Chapter
Our second Rhode Island Community Rating System (CRS) User Group meeting will focus on the recent coastal remapping project and the changes to the FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) in addition to the recent legislation passed by Congress regarding changes to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Jess Stimson, State Floodplain Mapping Coordinator, will speak about the process and timeline for the mapping project and how communities will be affected by the change in FEMA flood zones.
Our second topic will focus on the Biggert-Waters Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012. Michelle Burnett, State Floodplain Coordinator, will discuss the reauthorization to the NFIP and how it is projected to affect our state over the course of the next four to five years. State and local officials in attendance will have the opportunity to learn how primary/secondary residential and commercial structures in their communities will be affected, what to expect from these changes, and what they can do to minimize the potential financial burden associated with this change in legislation.
There will be time for questions after each topic and discussion is fully encouraged among attendees. In relation to CRS, most mapping activities will be affected since there’ll be changes in coastline mapping, acreage of the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), acreage of open space in the SFHA, the number of buildings in the SFHA, and repetitive loss property guidelines. Information on how to update the relevant activities to reflect these changes will be given.
An Outreach Project will be introduced for any communities interested in formulating a newsletter to send out to members inside and outside the SFHA informing of these changes.
