WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Methods to continue engagement of the plan after its adoption, as well as public reporting techniques
  • How to manage expectations to coordinate comprehensive plans
  • How to update regulatory zoning requirements, develop small-area plans, and improve other city services and polices after the adoption of a comprehensive plan

MORE SESSION DETAILS

Lots of time and resources are allocated to developing a robust comprehensive plan, which involves working with the public over a multi-year period and and identifying long-term goals that set policy direction for the next 20 years. However, developing the plan is only half of the planning process. Too many times comprehensive plans are adopted and then remain on a shelf without any resources allocated for implementation. This session will feature speakers from Plano, Texas, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina — three communities whose comprehensive plans have been awarded the American Planning Association’s Daniel Burnham Award for a Comprehensive Plan — to hear about how these award-winning plans are becoming reality. Implementation of comprehensive plans does not happen overnight and requires additional outreach and community discussion as conditions change and new trends in development arise. Learn how these cities have made efforts to continue engagement after the plan; introduce public reporting and benchmarks; and used their plan to update regulatory zoning requirements, develop small-area plans, and guide other city services and polices. Learn how to set and manage expectations for coordinating comprehensive plans, both internally and externally.
