MORE SESSION DETAILS

Peter Kagayama, the final keynote speaker at NPC17, challenged all planners to pay greater attention to "beauty, art, and great design." APA members promoted this perspective by establishing an Arts and Planning Interest Group in 2016. This session will focus on a related emerging trend in regional planning: attention to the value of arts and culture as a regional issue. It will feature a panel discussion led by the chair of APA's Regional and Intergovernmental Planning Division (a faculty member at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design), in conversation with staff from leading-edge arts and cultural programs at three regional planning agencies: Boston (MAPC), Chicago (CMAP), and Seattle (PSRC). Explore questions such as, When did your agency begin emphasizing arts and culture as a regional issue? What was the rationale for doing so? What roles do arts and culture play in your regional plan? What kinds of partnerships is your agency cultivating? How is success being measured? How is regional arts and cultural planning expected to evolve in the future? What advice do you have for other regions wanting to do arts and cultural planning? How can we continue to advance this emerging trend?
