MORE SESSION DETAILS
For the past two years, Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization and Burten Bell Carr Development have been part of a cohort representing Cleveland, Ohio, neighborhoods leading the implementation of Cleveland’s Climate Resilience and Urban Opportunity Plan. Through this process, neighborhood residents and stakeholders have worked with city officials, urban planners, and resiliency leaders to identify the greatest areas of risks to populations most vulnerable to climate change. A key part of the collaboration has been the willingness of grassroots leaders to champion strategies appropriate to their neighborhood to advance climate-resilience projects, including home weatherization, emergency preparedness, vacant land reuse/green infrastructure, and helping update Cleveland’s Climate Action Plans. Focusing on neighborhoods with the most demonstrated environmental-justice needs, the Trust for Public Land’s Climate-Smart Cities program is defining a process that unites data-driven environmental decision-making with community needs to ensure equity in where public spaces are created. These projects are exploring new models for community engagement and building community awareness, while equipping residents with the skills and knowledge to mitigate and respond to risks of climate change. This session will teach you to explore decision-making scenarios that unite science and community experiences.
