Urban water services have traditionally been provided by water engineers with little involvement from planners. However, the challenges of climate change, population growth, and problems with the industrial-era water infrastructure in the United States are making planners an important player in crafting new solutions. Water professionals are beginning to recognize that sustainable water innovations require changes in the way cities are designed, buildings configured, and streets and open spaces constructed. Therefore, today planners must be prepared to work more often and more closely with professionals in the local water supply, wastewater and stormwater fields. Explore the integrated approach to planning and water-resource management known as "One Water" which has been adopted as a key APA policy for water. Speakers will describe the challenges for water today and the "One Water" concept before turning to best practices for planners for integrating water into key intervention points, financing water projects, and engaging with water professionals.This session will provide an opportunity for participants to talk to others about crucial water issues in their city or county.
