Every day seems to bring new stories about autonomous vehicles (AVs) coming to cities across the nation, but communities lack understanding of and readiness to address the potential impacts of this technology on issues such as transportation systems and travel modes, land use and urban design, and access for poor and disadvantaged populations. APA’s research includes a PAS Report and Research Knowledgebase collection on planning for autonomous vehicles. APA is also convening a symposium in partnership with the National League of Cities and other NGOs, the purpose of which is to develop a playbook for cities and regions to prepare for this transformative new technology. Meanwhile, planning practitioners are working on the ground with communities and developers seeking to integrate AVs into transportation systems and development projects. Explore the latest thinking on planning for AVs, including short-term and long-term deployment projections; planning issues, solutions, and resources; case examples from Boston, Irving (Texas), and Tampa (Florida); and skills planners need to help communities prepare for AVs.
