From brass bands to bounce clubs, New Orleans’s music and culture originates in its neighborhoods. But for years culture was treated as a problem rather than an asset, leading to the loss of many historic music venues and the ongoing displacement of musicians and artists. Recently a number of musicians, artists, traditional culture bearers, and activists have been working with city planners to change that paradigm and ensure that the culture—and its creators—are supported. Tour locations that exemplify both the recent successes and ongoing challenges facing culture in New Orleans, and how policy and planning have influenced them.
