MORE SESSION DETAILS
Every fall for 19 years, the American Planning Association, Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, and Harvard Graduate School of Design have brought the planning directors of the nation’s 30 largest cities to Cambridge to engage with their colleagues in the Big City Planning Directors Institute. The program for the 2018 institute focused on a key problem all cities face: how to prepare for and adapt to the disruptive effects of autonomous vehicles and related technological trends. This session will explore how cities are preparing for the coming age of autonomous mobility, covering impacts and potential solutions related to transportation systems and travel modes, land use and urban design, access for poor and disadvantaged communities, and other issues. Speakers include Los Angeles Planning Director Vince Bertoni, New York City Planning Director Anita Laremont, and commentators David Dixon of Stantec (providing a planning practitioner’s perspective) and Andres Sevstuk of the Harvard Graduate School of Design (who is leading GSD’s Future of Streets research project). The session will be moderated by Armando Carbonell of the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy and APA Research Director David Rouse, who has led APA’s research initiative on autonomous vehicles.
